Èsme had worked extremely hard on her rainbow fingers* when her mom decided to throw a spontaneous party to honor her work on this particular technique. Everything rainbow themed: Cupcakes, face masks, face paint, plates, gift bags, streamers, hair clips!
This type of initiative is phenomenal Suzuki parenting and fun for everybody involved. Èsme's rainbow party is a fantastic example of positive reinforcement both as a means of cultivating confidence and as a reward for a LOT of work! Great work, Bente!
*For those of you not in my private studio, you may be asking yourself: What is a rainbow finger? Rainbow fingers, strong fingers, tall fingers, piano fingers. Teachers use different names. The process of cultivating fingers that are strong enough to drop onto the keys without "collapsing" is perhaps the single most important part of early study in my studio. Without this crucial skill, intermediate-advanced repertoire is impossible to play well.
